Motorcycle Tour Monte Amiata and Val D'Orcia
KM 170
Motorcycle tour of Monte Amiata and Val d'Orcia in a nutshell: Santa Fiora, Castel del Piano, Sant'Antimo, Montalcino, Torrenieri, Pienza, Montepulciano, Radicofani, Abbadia San Salvatore.
From the Villages of Amiata to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo
We set off towards Piancastagnaio, crossing the beautiful beech forest that surrounds Mount Amiata. Once there, you can visit the Aldobrandesco Castle.
Next comes Santa Fiora, the pearl of Mount Amiata, and the other villages of Arcidosso and Castel del Piano. Winding roads in a succession of views of the mountain and the valley.
After passing the picturesque village of Seggiano, along a charming road we reach Castel Nuovo dell'Abate with the beautiful Abbey of Sant'Antimo. A few more kilometers and the village of Montalcino, one of the symbols of Tuscan wine.
In the heart of the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
From here, the tour enters the heart of the Val d'Orcia, following roads that cross a landscape that has become iconic throughout the world: rolling hills, neat rows of vines, cypress trees, and villages suspended in time.
We'll begin with the famous "Torrenieri curves," site of many battles in the famous "Mille Miglia," and then in quick succession San Quirico D'Orcia, Pienza, and Montepulciano, three utterly charming towns where art, landscape, and culture intertwine in a unique way.
The next road takes us through the spa town of Chianciano, famous for its healing waters.
But now comes the best. An exciting route takes us to Radicofani, the city of Ghino di Tacco.
We cross a landscape with Alpine flavours.
From here the view is amazing. Below us stretches the Val D'Orcia with the Amiata in the background.
The climb up the mountain
From Radicofani, we now head towards Abbadia San Salvatore on an ancient road, a bit dilapidated but absolutely fascinating. Another 10 km along one of the oldest roads leading to the volcano's summit, and we've arrived. The changes in landscape and colors as we ascend the mountain are truly dramatic.
In the evening, we suggest a wine tasting of Montalcino and Montepulciano wines with dinner. For the more adventurous bikers, after dinner, there's a short nighttime tour of the villages of Monte Amiata, 40 km, with stops at some popular pubs. Of course, we'll be drinking fruit juices.
