MOUNT AMIATA ITINERARIES

In the hotel you can find the folder “Amiata come vuoi”, with 9 itineraries that will lead you to discover the most interesting places on Mount Amiata and its surroundings.

They can be travelled by car, motorbike or e-bike (for the more trained, even a muscular bike), between 50 and 150 km.

Ours is in fact a very rich area, unsuspected, with cultural, gastronomic and naturalistic aspects of absolute value.

These routes are designed to be enjoyed in a full day.

1) Monks and Bandits

San Salvatore Abbey > Vivo d'Orcia > Campiglia d'Orcia > San Filippo Baths > Radicofani > Bagno Vignoni

The route starts from Abbadia San Salvatore, the largest town in Amiata. The village boasts strong thousand-year-old traditions linked to the Lombard Abbey, but its development is mainly due to the mercury mining plant, now a museum, which made Amiata the second largest producer of mercury in the world. Next, the route touches Vivo d'Orcia, the highest town on Mount Amiata, known for its spring waters that quench the thirst of the provinces of Siena and Grosseto, and for the Hermitage with the 11th-century Church of Ermicciolo. The tour then continues to Bagni San Filippo, where you can enjoy a natural path for free bathing in the exceptional thermal waters. The next stop is Radicofani, a village of Aldobrandesche origins linked to the figure of the bandit Ghino di Tacco, mentioned by Dante
and Boccaccio for his extravagances. To conclude, we suggest a walk in the square in Bagno Vignoni to admire the large medieval pool with thermal water at 52°C.

2) Lords and preachers

Santa Fiora > Mount Labbro > Arcidosso

A varied itinerary between the knowledge of the Aldobrandeschi Counts and the Sforza family, owners of Santa Fiora until 1624. Certainly worth seeing are the Robbiane ceramics and the Peschiera where Pope Pius II Piccolomini also rested. The Monte Labro Natural Park certainly offers various possibilities for excursions: naturalistic ones through routes with sighting points of the animals that live here in freedom; those linked to the prophet David Lazzaretti, precursor of real socialism (free Church in a free State); spiritual ones with the Tibetan Merigar center, a refreshment point also for the Dalai Lama. Then lastly visit the village of Arcidosso, also linked to the Aldobrandeschi, the climb to the castle is fascinating.

3) The Volcano of Tuscany

Nature trail on Mount Amiata. Passing by Loc. Le Macinaie, it arrives at the summit where since 1910 there is a monumental iron cross erected by order of Pope Leo XIII; an exceptional panoramic point, thanks to the morphology of the territory you can look around 360° you will recognize: Siena, Argentario, Elba and Gran Sasso. Then going down to Piancastagnaio observe the Aldobrandesca fortress and take a walk in the small historic village and its districts. After that you can visit Castell'Azzara also linked to the Aldobrandeschi and an old minor mining center; be careful not to miss the spectacular cave of Sasso Colato with groups of stalagmites

4) The Aldobrandeschi

Food and Wine Tour at the foot of Mount Amiata. Arcidosso is a medieval village linked to the Aldobrandeschi family with a modest-sized town center. Going out in the direction
Grosseto you can visit the Pieve ad Lamulas Gothic Church linked to the Templars. The village of Montelaterone preserves its ancient medieval structure intact. Finally, lose yourself in the cellars and oil mills among the
medieval villages of Montegiovi and Montenero with the splendid view.

5) Artists and wine

Food and wine itinerary between wine and works of art. We start from Seggiano, a minor village of Amiata where there is an artistic park of contemporary art with numerous works of very famous heterogeneous artists. Heading towards Stazione onte Amiata, we cross the Orcia river and, passing by the suggestive castle of Velona, ​​we reach Sant'Antimo and its Abbey. Premostatense monastic complex is one of the most important architectures of the Tuscan Romanesque. Then crossing the vineyards of Brunello, you will reach the town of Montalcino with its medieval fortress and its wine shops.

6) The scents of Tuscany

Food and Wine Route at the foot of Mount Amiata. On the Grosseto side overlooking the Maremma is Roccalbegna, a medieval village in the Albegna river valley at the foot of two fortified cliffs.
Along the way you can visit various companies of typical products. Finally the small village of Cana with the Aldobrandesco castle.

7) The Charm of Val D'Orcia

Location: La Foce > Castiglioncello sul Trinoro > San Casciano dei Bagni

Route that winds through the southern part of the Val D'Orcia, perhaps the most beautiful from a naturalistic point of view. Along the road that leads to Chianciano Terme, you can start the tour with a visit to the garden of the Tenuta Origo, created starting in 1910. It is an Italian garden that overlooks the Val d'Orcia and Amiata; Then continue along the dirt road adjacent to the villa to reach Castiglioncello sul Trinoro, an enchanted place with a breathtaking view, a medieval village now a widespread hotel. Conclude the excursion with a relaxing bath in the 40° thermal waters of the Fonteverde establishment in San Casciano dei Bagni.

8) The Renaissance in Tuscany

Montepulciano > Pienza Loc. Spedaletto

Situated in the hills of Mount Amiata, Montecucco is a wine that represents the authentic flavors of Tuscany. Certified DOC and DOCG since 2011, it stands out for the excellence of Sangiovese (90%) and the particular geological and climatic conditions that give it a unique bouquet. The winemaking tradition dates back to the Etruscans, offering a thousand-year history. After the vineyards, the journey takes you to Pienza, a Renaissance village in the Val d'Orcia and a UNESCO heritage site since 1996. With its stone streets and breathtaking views of Mount Amiata, Pienza is an unmissable stop for those seeking the essence of Tuscany.

9) The Etruscans

Sorano > Pitigliano > Sovana > Saturnia

The Etruscans have fundamentally marked the history of this part of Tuscany. Mount Amiata was their Sacred Mountain. To the south we find some of their most important centers. Sorano and Pitigliano
with historic villages of absolute importance. The “vie cave” paths dug into the tuff, absolutely fascinating. Of great importance is the Cathedral of Sovana, one of the most important Roman Gothic buildings in Tuscany. It ends with a swim in the Saturnia spa. At the Mulinaccio open-air waterfalls or in the Saturnia spa.
