The Aldobrandesca Fortress It is a building with purely military characteristics, in the historic center of the town of Piancastagnaio, in a dominant position over the valley of the Paglia River in the province of Siena. It was built in an easily defensible place, from which the valley below could be controlled, in an often disputed border area. The fortification was mentioned for the first time in an imperial diploma of Emperor Henry IV and in one of Otto IV which confirmed its ownership to the Abbey of San Salvatore. The latter granted it as a fief to the powerful Aldobrandeschi family, who already owned numerous castles between the Maremma and Amiata
