The Aldobrandesca Fortress of Piancastagnaio

Piancastagnaio Fortress

La Piancastagnaio Fortress It is one of the most impressive medieval fortifications in southern Tuscany. Located in the historic center of the village of Piancastagnaio, it dominates the Paglia River valley and represents one of the most important historical symbols of the Amiata region.

Thanks to its strategic location, the fortress controlled a border area often contested between local and imperial powers. For this reason, since the Middle Ages it played a key military role in controlling the communication routes between Amiata, Val d'Orcia, and Maremma.

The medieval origins of the Piancastagnaio Fortress

The first evidence of the fortress dates back to the imperial era. The structure is mentioned in a diploma of Henry IV and later in a document of Otto IV, who confirmed its ownership to the Abbey of San Salvatore.

The abbey later granted it as a fief to the powerful Aldobrandeschi family. This noble family controlled numerous castles between the Maremma and Mount Amiata, thus consolidating their influence over the area.

Today, the fortress retains its distinctly military characteristics. The mighty walls and dominant tower testify to its defensive function.

Furthermore, from the summit you can enjoy a suggestive view of the Paglia Valley and the surrounding hills. It is no coincidence that it is one of the most popular stops for those visiting the medieval villages of Monte Amiata.
