The small historic village, born during the period of the fortification, is certainly worth a visit. It owes its initial expansion to the Aldobrandeschi family (12th century) who took care of the fortification starting with the construction of the famous Castle still intact and visitable today and is the only Castle in Italy to be original in all its parts.
The Castle, also called Rocca, was built by the Aldobrandeschi starting from the year 860 on pre-existing buildings from the Lombard era. It later passed to the County of Santa Fiora following the division of assets between the two branches of the family.
The one of the Arcidosso Castle is the oldest extra-urban government building in Italy and one of the oldest in Europe; in fact when the main tower was built, the fortress already had a two-storey stone building which was raised by another two floors with the construction of its towers and the two crenellated walls, also equipped with towers. In the 500th century, with the fall of the Republic, the territory was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and followed its fate. Today the Aldobrandesca Fortress of Arcidosso is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Italy and one of the few fully accessible to the public
