The Aldobrandeschi Castle

A center of medieval origin, Arcidosso is located at the foot of Mount Amiata

Arcidosso Castle: History and Medieval Charm on Mount Amiata

📍 The small historic village of Arcidosso, founded during the period of fortified fortifications, is certainly worth a visit. In fact, it owes its initial expansion to the Aldobrandeschi family (12th century), who oversaw the fortification of the area, beginning with the construction of the famous Castle, which is still intact and open to visitors today.

✨ The Castle, also known as Rocca Aldobrandesca, is unique in Italy, being one of the few completely original examples in its entirety. Furthermore, its construction began in 860 AD on pre-existing Lombard-era structures, testifying to an even more ancient history.

🏛️ Subsequently, the fortress passed to the County of Santa Fiora, following the division of assets between the two branches of the Aldobrandeschi family. Consequently, the castle continued to play a strategic and political role of great importance in the Amiata region.

📜 Arcidosso Castle is considered the oldest suburban government building in Italy and one of the oldest in Europe. Indeed, even when the main tower was built, the fortress already had a two-story stone building, later added to the structure and fortified with towers and double crenellated walls.

⚔️ In the 16th century, with the fall of the Republic, the territory was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, subsequently sharing its historical events. At the same time, the fortress retained its symbolic and architectural value.

🌿 Today, the Rocca Aldobrandesca in Arcidosso is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Italy and one of the few fully accessible to the public. For this reason, it is an unmissable destination for those visiting Monte Amiata and seeking an authentic experience of history, culture, and evocative landscapes.
